Every team got a chance to retain a maximum of 4 players from their team before the mega auction. Teams retained players according to their requirements. Looking at some players you can say that it was a bad idea for teams to retain those players looking at their performances in IPL 202#. So here are the top 5 worst retentions of IPL 2022.
#5 Mayank Agarwal
Punjab Kings retained only two players before the mega auction and Mayank Agarwal was one of them. Mayank was a very good asset for Punjab in the past two seasons and they even made him their captain but Mayank Agarwal failed to deliver especially with the bat. He was not consistent and later on he was removed from the opening position as well.
#4 Venkatesh Iyer
Kolkata expected way too much from Venkatesh Iyer by looking at his performance in 2nd half of the last year’s IPL and they retained him but Venkatesh Iyer did not play according to his calibre and failed. He did not score many runs in opening and was shifted to lower-order after 6 matches but he failed there too.
#3 Anrich Nortje
Delhi Capitals retained Anrich Nortje before IPL 2022 they put him above Kagiso Rabada which was also criticized by many experts. Nortje was very good for Delhi Capitals in the last two seasons and that was the reason why Delhi was so confident in him but in IPL 2022 he failed miserably as he was not available for Delhi on regular basis due to his injury and when he got available, he was not that effective.
#2 Varun Chakraborty
Another retention of which Kolkata will not be proud is Varun Chakraborty. Varun Chakraborty’s last two IPL seasons were amazing. He even got a chance to play for India in the T20 world cup but in IPL 2022 he failed to deliver as he lost his wicket-taking ability. Batsmen were looking quite comfortable while playing him and it will be honest to say that his mystery spin was not a mystery anymore. He got few chances in the early half of IPL 2022 but later on, he was removed from playing 11 and Sunil Narine played as the only spinner for KKR.
#1 Abdul Samad
It will be unfair to say that Abdul Samad was bad retention because he did not get many chances in IPL 2022 but you can say this is management’s failure because they failed in their tactics and they are wasting him. Abdul Samad was one of three retentions of SRH before the mega auction but after playing 2 to 3 matches he was removed from the playing 11.
