IPL and PSL are the top two most entertaining leagues in cricket. IPL is of India and PSL is of Pakistan. Many players from all around the world participate in these two leagues some of the players are common in both of these leagues. Today we will do a fun exercise of comparing both of these leagues in different aspects like origin, budget, players, etc.
Origin
Indian Premier League IPL started in the year 2008 just after the first T20 world cup and IPL is a very important league in establishing the T20 format in cricket. The First edition of IPL was comprised of 8 teams.
PSL which is the Pakistan Super League started in the year 2016 with 5 teams participating in the first edition of the league.
Budget
All the 8 teams which participated in the first edition of IPL gave 723 million dollars combined after which IPL’s budget was 723 million dollars in the first edition. IPL’s budget increased every year due to its success and this year it is 1200 million dollars.
Whereas PSL’s all 5 franchises gave 90 million dollars in the first edition in 2016 which was increased in 2018 by 40 million dollars after the addition of Multan Sultan as the 6th team in PSL.
Prize money
In IPL winning team gets 20 crore rupees whereas the runner-up team gets 12.5 crore rupees. Man of the match in each IPL game gets 2 lakh rupees.
In PSL winning team gets 4 crore rupees whereas the runner-up team gets 1.5 crore rupees. Man of the match in each PSL game gets 5 lakh rupees.
Method of picking players
In IPL it is an auction that decides the future of a player. A list of players comes in the auction and all the franchises bid on them and one with the highest bid gets the player. Base prices of players differ according to the capabilities of players.
In PSL method of picking players is completely different as players are divided into categories and each category has a fixed price above which player of that category will not get money. The highest category in PSL is platinum.
Speciality
IPL is mostly considered of batsmen league as batsmen are more dominating than bowlers in IPL but now bowlers are also equally important in the league but still, batsmen dominance will always be there in IPL.
PSL is the opposite of IPL in this as in PSL bowlers are those who are given more importance. Bowlers are considered the soul of PSL. But things are now changing in PSL too as after this 2022 edition of PSL it is now shifting to the batsmen side.
Players and talent
IPL is all about money and big superstars from all around the globe. IPL is very famous when it comes to players due to the participation of overseas and local big stars of the game. IPL is somewhat a little behind than PSL in terms of talent as IPL provides players with money.
In PSL overseas stars are not as successful as they are in IPL examples are Dwyane Bravo, Chris Gayle, etc. They all are very big names in IPL but they are not successful in PSL. In terms of talent, PSL is very famous as it has given many big names to the world. Examples are Jofra Archer who has represented England after his success in PSL. Liam Livingston is another good example.
Viewers and broadcasters
The 2020 season of IPL broke all the records when an average of 114 million viewers watched the matches which is the highest in any cricket match. 30 TV channels from all around the world broadcast IPL.
PSL has only 10 broadcaster TV channels all around the world.
